- The correct place in your workflow to embed fonts is when you create the PDF file, not afterwards in Acrobat. You didn't indicate from what application you are creating the PDF file from (i.e., InDesign, Word, etc.), but the settings used in creating the PDF file determine whether the fonts get embedded or not. Important Hint!

When you create a professional document, of course you ensure that the images are correct, the content has no grammatical or spelling mistakes, and that you use good typography to convey your message with text. So it’s important that the same font used in the software you use to create the PDF is also seen by whoever reads your PDF file, no matter what program they use to open it.
The ability to embed the fonts you use ranks among the top reasons why PDF software like PhantomPDF is a great choice for creating documents.
Why font embedding is important
Apr 19, 2012 How to embed fonts in a PDF using Acrobat X or XI Learn how to edit PDF by embedding fonts in an existing PDF using Acrobat X Pro or Suite or Acrobat XI Pro. Viewing Fonts in Adobe Reader: 1. Go to File on the menu bar and click Properties. Under Properties, select the Fonts tab to see fonts in the PDF, and their embed status.
Ever get a popup warning that certain fonts are missing when you try to open a document? Then you know why embedding fonts can be critical. When this happens, the application used to open the file will substitute a font of its choosing for the missing fonts. That can change the look, page flow, and readability of the document. This occurs when the creator of the document a font that they have installed on their computer, but you (the document reader) don’t have installed.
To ensure that the person viewing the document is able to open the file and see the content in the same font used to create the document, you must embed the fonts into the file. Using PDF software such as Foxit PhantomPDF to create your document makes this relatively easy.
How to embed fonts in PhantomPDF
With PhantomPDF, you have the ability to embed all fonts, non-standard fonts, a specific list of fonts or even no fonts at all. You may decide to embed only some of the fonts due to size restrictions, as each embedded font causes the file size to increase slightly, or due to licensing issues with the fonts used.
Embedding fonts means that those fonts will be used instead of font substitution when users view or print. Users will see the original font that you used in your document.
Here’s how to choose which fonts to embed from within the PhantomPDF printer:
To view current fonts, both embedded and otherwise, do this:
(Note that if the “Actual Font” is different from the font title, it means a font is not embedded, and is being replaced with a different font that is available within PhantomPDF.)
To save space, you can choose to unembed fonts using the PDF Optimizer:
The ability to embed fonts affects the document at all levels, including on your screen. So it’s a good idea to know how to handle fonts in your PDF documents when working with Foxit PhantomPDF.

Your best option is to use one of the free PDF virtual printers available on the web. Free PDF Printer is a great free option and includes the option to embed fonts in your documents. Since you are producing PDF's for print, you would be better to use this printer than the Print to PDF option as there are huge issues with fonts in the Microsoft PDF production . . .
Simply select print and then choose the virtual printer to create your pdf, the software has 2 options, Embed all fonts or subset fonts.

OK, apparently installing the PDF printer worked, but when I check to see if the fonts are embedded, they are called strange names like CID Font +F1, F10, etc. I used Arial and TNR so is this going to be OK?
Also, in another try to embed the fonts, 'embedded subset' appears. Is that OK?
I am learning NOT to open a PDF with Twinuni - I right click on the PDF file name and open with Adobe Acrobat DC then I can check if the fonts are embedded.

Subsetted fonts means that the PDF producer has pulled only the letters you have used form each font and included them in the PDF - typesetters/Graphic Designers do this to reduce file size
It is possible the PDF printer renamed the fonts, as long as Adobe Acrobat DC sees embedded fonts and the document renders correctly, you are good to go . . .
Please provide a screenshot of this Page - In Acrobat on any of the documents you have created with the PDF Printer, click 'File' - 'Properties' - 'Fonts'

Yes you are OK, the PDF printer has embedded the fonts, it has just named the fonts incorrectly. Your clients should have no problem with the documents you create . . .

DaveM121, hopefully you can help me further with this problem. My client discovered that the PDF I sent to her is the wrong page size. The Word 2007 file was 6x9 for a print book, but after I embedded the fonts as you helped me figure out, the page size became 8.5 x 11. What can I do to fix this?
